What is a CSA?
Usually when someone asks, “Hey, can you tell me about that flower thing you do?” I know exactly what they are talking about. Every year, we get lots of questions about our CSA program so I thought I would share a little more with you about our CSA and how it works.
CSA is an acronym for Community Supported Agriculture. Traditionally, CSA programs were implemented by vegetable farmers and we (super smart) flower farmers just borrowed their great idea. At its core, a CSA program is a business model that helps to keep small farms like ours in business. It provides an opportunity for you, the community, to financially invest in our farm at the beginning of a growing season when sales are typically at their lowest and our operating costs at their highest. The commitment of your “share” helps us invest in seeds, supplies, and equipment before our growing season takes bloom.
CSA programs support more sustainable agricultural practices as well as financial sustainability, keeping the money within the local economy and local pockets. These programs also provide the community with a better and much fresher product. Most flowers found in grocery stores and used in traditional floral shops are imported from other countries. They are filled with chemicals, often sitting in warehouses out of water for a week before the stores receive them. It’s no wonder that flowers get such a bad rap for dying so quickly. After learning how flowers are imported, I personally think it’s a miracle they even stay alive for a day.
Once our fields start producing, we harvest every other day during the entire peak season. Our CSA program allows us to deliver large numbers of bouquets to one location for pick-up. Our shares include the premium crops harvested that week, guaranteeing you our freshest and most beautiful blooms. You share in some of the risks and rewards of farming without pulling a single weed.
We love being able to provide a CSA program for the community for many reasons but most importantly because it allows us to get to know the community of people we grow for. Here at Wildroot, we promise to grow our flowers using sustainable growing practices and we will continue to deliver you the healthiest quality blooms straight from our fields. We promise you’ll see the difference in our blooms.
