The Journey of a Bouquet
At Wildroot Flower Co., we believe flowers are more than just something pretty to look at — they’re the result of a lot of hard work, planning, and a little bit of magic. When you hold one of our bouquets, it’s the final chapter in a long story that started months ago in the soil.
And guess what? You’re a part of that story. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how we grow, harvest, and arrange your flowers — and why we’re so glad you’re along for the ride.
Step 1: Planning and Planting – The Blueprint for Beautiful Blooms
Every season, we don’t just plant flowers — we map out the whole story. It’s not random; I promise I don’t flip around in a sundress sprinkling seeds. Boy, do I wish it was that easy…
There’s a lot of thought behind what gets planted, when, and where. We take the time to pick the perfect flowers for each season, considering how they’ll grow, what they’ll look like at their peak, how long they last for our customers, and how they’ll fit together in a bouquet. This isn’t a “plant now, hope for the best” situation. We plan like it’s our job (which, spoiler alert, it is).
We start with the seeds — carefully chosen for their color, size, and resilience. I spend a lot of time during the growing season to make notes of what works and what gets the axe for the upcoming year. I look at the ground as expensive real estate. Every square foot counts. If it ain’t tough, we ain’t growin’ it!
Once those little guys are in the ground, it’s all about making sure they have the best chance to thrive. We focus on healthy soil and sustainable farming practices, which is a fancy term for organic, and the kind of attention to detail that makes sure your flowers are strong and vibrant, no matter what curveballs Ohio’s weather throws our way.
And you? You’re part of this whole plan because every time you pick up a bouquet or sign up for a CSA share, you’re supporting this process. You’re helping us create something bigger than just a pretty flower.
Step 2: Harvesting – Knowing When to Pick
You know that sweet spot when you find a fruit that’s perfectly ripe? That’s what we’re aiming for with every flower. We’ve got a trained eye for when flowers are at their peak — not too early, not too late. We’re out there every day, checking the blooms, ensuring they’re ready to go into your bouquet looking their absolute best.
Harvesting isn’t as simple as picking a bunch of flowers. Each one is hand-cut at just the right moment, ensuring it’s fresh, strong, and ready for the vase. It’s a bit like catching a train at just the right time — if you miss it, you’ve got a wilted bouquet. If you catch it just right, you’ve got something that will last.
Step 3: Designing the Bouquet – Crafting a Little Floral Magic
Once we’ve harvested, it’s time to create something special. Arranging a bouquet isn’t just about throwing flowers together — it’s about balance, texture, and color. We consider every detail, making sure the flowers complement each other, creating a bouquet that’s visually interesting and full of life.
When you receive your bouquet, it’s not just a collection of flowers — it’s a reflection of the time, energy, and planning that went into creating it.
We pick our flowers the day before you receive them in most cases. When I first started growing, I remember my biggest worry was about negative feedback about my flowers. A friend said to me once, Lynds you know your flowers will die eventually right?
I realized I was focused on the wrong part of the experience for you. I was worried about the end result, verses how much joy they bring you while they are living. It was an aha moment for me.
So now, I spend time teaching you how to change the water, trim the stems and for the love of Pete, please start with a clean vase!!
Step 4: Getting It to You – The Final Step
Now, the bouquet is ready to head your way. Whether you’re picking it up at our farm or having it delivered, we take extra care to make sure it gets to you looking its best. We make sure it’s delivered with the same attention to detail we put into every other step. It’s like a little surprise — you never know what kind of arrangement you’ll get, but you can count on it being gorgeous and fresh.
If you’re picking up your bouquet, consider it a little farm visit. Take a moment to soak in the sights and sounds of the farm. If it’s being delivered, you get the luxury of enjoying a beautiful bouquet without having to leave the house. Either way, you’re getting something that’s been created with intention — something that’s ready to make your space brighter.
Step 5: The Vase Moment – Your Turn to Enjoy the Beauty
Finally, the bouquet lands in your hands, and it’s time to show it off. We give you care instructions to help you keep it fresh, but really, it’s up to you to decide where it’ll go — the kitchen table, your bedside, or even a little spot by the front door. Wherever you place it, we hope it brings joy and beauty into your everyday life.
When you enjoy your bouquet, you’re part of the full journey. You’re experiencing the result of months of planning, days of careful work, and the effort of everyone involved in bringing it to life. And that, to us, is the most rewarding part of it all.
So, that’s the journey of a bouquet — from the farm to your home. And we’re so glad you’re part of it. Your support helps us continue this process, grow more beautiful flowers, and share them with you and the community.
Thank you for being a part of the Wildroot story.
